Linda's Sound-Off:

I don’t know about you but the summer is the best time for me to Listen to the “Quiet Voices” within me. As I head to the mountains, long walks in the cool summer evening, or just lying on the beach for a lazy afternoon, it is good to really, REALLY, listen intently to the inner voices within me.

One way I start is just sitting very quietly ( for those of you who know me, you know this is tough for me! J ).

But to just listen to the ocean waves, the birds, the crackling of leaves, the sound of walking is a special treat. It is when I do this for a while, that I can begin to hear my innermost feelings of where I am in my life satisfaction and think about goals for the future.

With what is called the “button creep” meaning the slow but sure “creeping” of technologies into our lives such as cell phones, IPODS, remote controls, wireless devices, etc., it is hard to just LISTEN in quiet with no interruptions.

Sometimes, when you have a hearing loss, it is easier because just taking your hearing aids off can make your world very quiet!

However, I challenge you this summer, to seriously take the time to listen, become centered on what is most important to you and take time to learn something new about yourself by quietly listening to your inner voice.

Of course, we hope to see you at one of our Delaware Hearing Loss Academy Classes, our 3rd Annual Sizzlin’ Summer Picnic and our Get Up and Go Social in July!

Have a great summer and thanks to everyone who helped HLADE to have a successful program year!

Yours in advocacy,

    News You can Use

A NINE-year-old American boy who was suspicious of a "Rice Krispie" sound in his ear, was found to have a couple of spiders living in there. What began as a faint popping turned into earache for Jesse Courtney from Albany in the state of Oregon.

Jesse's mother, Diane Courtney, said her son insisted he kept hearing a faint popping in his ear - "like Rice Krispies''. "They were walking on my eardrums,'' Jesse said, according to the Associated Press.

Dr David Irvine said it looked like the boy had something in his ear when he examined him. When he irrigated the ear, the first spider came out, dead. The other spider took a second dousing before it emerged, still alive.

Both were about the size of a pencil eraser. Jesse has kept the spiders as a souvenir. Source: Spiders

A GIFT FOR MUSIC AND POETRY

Chances are high that most of us have never heard of Josephine Dickinson. Deaf since age of 6, this British woman went to Oxford University and taught music and is an accomplished poet.

She just published a book on poems - "There's Something Going on Here." One cannot compare Beethoven with Dickinson. Beethoven became deaf midway of his career as a composer whereas Dickinson became deaf while as a very young girl.

This makes all the more amazing her grasp of music. Source: Deaf Digest Blue, 4/22/07.

STOPPING DEAF DRIVER VS STOPPING A HEARING DRIVER

A veteran police officer, with more than 30 years in law enforcement to his credit, said he has stopped deaf drivers and hearing drivers alike on various traffic violations.

He said: I have stopped a few deaf drivers. All of them pulled over after seeing the emergency lights on the roof of my car. And every week I try to stop hearing drivers but they do not stop, forcing me to pursue them.

They did not stop because they could not hear the siren, being distracted by loud radios or by cell phones! Source: Deaf Digest Gold, 4/20/07.
