Linda's Sound-Off:

SPRING has been slow in coming this year and as it comes, we are also facing “MOTHER’S DAY. The two are not unrelated as MOTHERS certainly provide nourishment to their offspring just like the sun and rain helps to germinate flowers.

BUT the wonderful thing is that this happens in organizations too.

On APRIL 9th, HLADE had a great meeting that was the brainchild of NICK FINA, new Vice-President of HLADE. The meeting was held at and sponsored by Agilent Technologies. Both Real-Time Captioning and ASL interpreters were on hand.

It was a meeting where deaf and hard of hearing people, National & State Hearing Loss Association, private and corporate sectors came together to share, learn, grow and experience the power of helping each other with common issues.

I have to admit to feeling the pride a ‘mother’ must feel as she watches her children grow into independence and succeed.

As Dr. Terry Portis, President of the Hearing Loss Association of America said after the meeting : “HLADE is doing an awesome job in Delaware and we are extremely proud of all the work you are doing to help people with hearing loss in Delaware.”

And just like a proud mother, it is a great feeling to see your infant ‘organization’ getting its wings and taking off toward a new future.

Let’s celebrate the gift of spring and BETTER SPPEECH AND HEARING MONTH in May by spreading our wings and sharing the news that there is help and hope for people with hearing loss!

Yours in advocacy,
LINDA

Special Notice

Monday, May 21, 2007 - A SPECIAL MEETING DATE TO CELEBRATE MAY AS BETTER SPEECH AND HEARING MONTH FOR HLADE WILMINGTON SUPPORT GROUP. THIS MEETING IS CO-SPONSORED BY NEW DIRECTIONS, INC. AND HLADE.

THERE WILL NOT BE A REGULAR SUPPORT GROUP MEETING ON 5/7/07.

Clinical depression, a recurring and disabling illness, affects 19 million Americans in any given year. It is a major cause of misery, as it not only affects the patient but also their family and friends.

Often clinical depression is accompanied by other medical conditions, such as hearing loss. Fortunately, clinical depression is one of the most treatable of mental disorders, particularly due to the advent of many pharmaceutical treatments.

On Monday evening, May 21, 2007, New Directions Delaware will host a presentation by renowned neuropsychiatrist Carol Tavani, M.D, M.S., F.A.P.A., Executive Director of Christiana Psychiatric Services and Margaret Keenan, Ph.D., Director of Health Psychology at Eugene duPont Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Institute.

Dr. Tavani will discuss new medications that are in the development pipeline and new uses for existing medications. Dr. Keenan will discuss the complexity of treating multiple conditions, particularly depression and hearing loss.

New Directions Delaware, Inc. is a support and education group for persons with depression or bipolar disorder (manic depression) and for their families and friends.

Unless otherwise noted, support meetings are on the second and third Monday of each month and education meetings are held on the fourth Monday. All meetings are free and open to the public. Donations are requested, but not required, to defray expenses.

Location:
Aldersgate United Methodist Church
2313 Concord Pike (Rte. 202)
Wilmington DE

Ask the Expert - Question of the Month

From am HALDE.org e-mail: Why is Meniere’s Disease sometimes called “Watchmaker’s Disease” and what are some of its symptoms?

Answer from Dr. Michael Teixido:

I have worked for 20 years with Meniere’s disease and have never heard this term “Watchmaker’s Disease” before.

I searched a little and found it refers to a tendency for people who do very close and fine work to get Meniere’s Disease, which is not really true any more.

Close work that causes eyestrain CAN cause dizziness but by a different mechanism than the Hydrops of Meniere’s. Prolonged dizziness triggered by eyestrain is now recognized as being caused by migraine.

Atypical symptoms of migraine such as dizziness can occur without any headache whatsoever! Many dizzy patients previously thought to have Meniere’s Disease are now recognized as having Migraine Associated Vertigo and respond wonderfully to standard migraine therapies.

Many patients with vertigo for years who were thought to have Meniere’s continue to suffer needlessly and could benefit from an updated re-evaluation to see if their condition is in fact easily treatable.

The truth changes as knowledge unfolds. Michael Teixido, M.D.

TECHNOLOGY CORNER

What is AudioNoise? A SOFTWARE that is a blocker for bothering sounds and a relaxing background.

Free version available - full functionality for $ 9.00 - site licenses With AudioNoise you can take advantage of the so-called masking effect: by presenting a low level broadband noise to the ear it is possible to effectively block other (possibly disturbing) sounds.

The point is that a broadband noise is much less disturbing than, say, a high- pitched tone, because the brain doesn't interpret it as important information.

In fact, after listening to broadband noise for 10-15 minutes you won't even notice it any more unless it is fairly loud. Applications include:
  • Cube farm background - focus on your work again

  • Tinnitus masking (Noiser)
  • Babby soothing

  • Transfer function measurements (e.g. of your desktop speakers)

  • Training background for cochlear-implant patients

  • The AudioNoise software can generate different types of noise: white, pink, and so-called physiological noise.

The latter is adapted to the human ear and stimulates the inner ear (the cochlea) uniformly over its entire length. Each noise type can be restricted to an arbitrary frequency range.

In order to make the noise even more relaxing, you can apply the "surf effect" to it. This means a waxing and waning of the noise similar to an ocean surf. With AudioNoise you can choose the strength and period (timescale) of that effect.

AudioNoise can play the noise on your computer or save it to a sound file that can be burned to an audio CD.

In addition, AudioNoise contains a special tool for tinnitus diagnosis: the Tinnitus Finder. This is a tone generator with a slider to set pitch.

Together with AudioNoise's volume control patients can match the AudioNoise-tone to their tinnitus in order to estimate the tinnitus frequency and to give others an impression of their tinnitus Level.

You can download and use AudioNoise without registration as long as you want. The free version of AudioNoise is fully functional except that the duration of play-back and sound files is restricted to 30 minutes.

After that it is necessary to restart play-back. In the registered version there is no such limitation.

    Specifications:
    Latest Version - 1.3.1
Operating System Support - Windows 2000/XP
    License - Freeware/Shareware
    Price - US $ 9.00

    BOOK OF THE MONTH

Deaf Musicians by Pete Seeger, a famous musician himself, is a story about "Poor Lee! He used to be a jazzman who could make the piano go yimbatimba- TANG—zang-zang. But now he’s lost his hearing, and the bandleader had to let him go.

So Lee goes to a school for the deaf to learn sign language. There, he meets Max, who used to play the sax.

Riding the subway to class, they start signing about all the songs they love. A bass player named Rose joins in and soon they’ve got a little sign language band. And in no time they’re performing for audiences in the subway, night after night."

Available at www.amazon.com for $16.99 new!
