Fascinating Facts on the History of Hearing Loss

#1. Causes Listed for Deafness

How does one become deaf? At one school for the deaf, such causes of students' deafness were listed as follows:
  • toothache
  • inflammation of the brain
  • cramps in the head
  • eruption of the ear
  • nervous fever
  • head trouble
  • teething
  • swallowed tobacco
  • loud nearby screaming
Were these causes listed as a joke? No, these reasons were written up nearly 115 years ago! Knowledge of deafness and its causes were not as advanced in these early days.
