Hearing-Related Emergency Response Kits for
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Populations

The National Hearing Loss Association has provided the following list of resources which individuals with hearing loss may want to consider to assist them in case of emergency.

You may want to consider this equipment in addition to your basic emergency supplies.

Hearing related equipment suggested for an on-site or limited emergency situation:

1. Pen/Pencil and Paper ($3.00)

2. Pocket Talker by Williams Sound (substitute for hearing aids and enables communication in a noisy environment) ($179.00)

3. Spare batteries (AA and AAA will work with all the equipment recommended) ($10.00)

4. Bi-lateral head phones and neck loop for Pocket Talker (give people with different degrees of hear loss the ability to used the device) ($65.50)

5. Telephone amplifier (one that works with a cord phone and one that works with a cell phone -- one of each) ($74.90)

6. TTY - battery powered so can use for short conversations if needed too (one that works with a cord phone and call phone would be best and save money) ($299.00)

7. Personal pager with vibrator (this will allow you to "call" people who cannot hear - works like the devices you are give at restaurants when you are waiting to be called) ($42.95)

8. Ziploc bags for keeping hearing aids, or equipment if in a raining/wet situation ($3.00)

9. Towel to dry off and a rain cap that will allow people to keep their hearing aid in if it is raining - without this, you will not be able to communicate with them very well ($10.00)

10. A waterproof container to store the equipment in ($5.00)

6. Telephone Ring signaler (flashing) ($49.95)

7. TTY device with AC power and battery back up (these can be used for short conversations in some cases too) ($299.00)

8. Visible flashing alarm to alert people of emergencies of announcements ($54.95)

9. 3 Dri-aid kits for hearing aids ($4.95 ea.)

10. Ziploc bags ($3.00)

11. Personal vibrating alarm ($42.95)

12. Alarm clock with vibrating alert ($39.95)

13. Visible fire alarm ($169.00)

Waterproof container for storage and transport of equipment ($10.00)
